The Portland Winterhawks wrapped up their January schedule this past weekend. Portland finished the month with a 3-7-3 record, going 2-3-3 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Winterhawks now sit at a total record of 22-23-4, and are seventh in the Western Conference standings. Here are three storylines from Portland’s first month in 2026.
First, Nathan Free had a bounce back January. After only two points in the month of December, Free totaled nine points in 13 games to start 2026. Free also had a streak of five games in a row with a least one point. Notably, Free has stepped up his even strength play. Only one of Nathan Free’s points this month came on the power-play. Now, Free sits at second in total goals on the team, and fourth in total points.
Secondly, Luke Wilfley had a great January. The Englewood, Colorado native had seven points this month. Twice in January, Wilfley had points in three consecutive games. One of those streaks is still active as the Winterhawks enter February. Wilfley’s current point streak started with a highlight reel goal on a penalty shot against the Brandon Wheat Kings on January 24th. Wilfley then followed up that performance with a goal against both the Wenatchee Wild and the Penticton Vees.
Lastly, Will McLaughlin has stepped up on defense for Portland. After the Winterhawks traded Carter Sotheran back on January 6th, McLaughlin became the highest point scoring defenseman on the Winterhawks roster. The rookie from Canmore, Alberta, has seven goals and 14 assists so far this year. On January 21st, McLaughlin was one of three Winterhawks that were invited to the 2026 WHL Prospects Game presented by Showpass. The game includes 44 NHL Draft eligible players from the WHL. The two Portland teammates that will be joining McLaughlin at the event are Jordan Duguay and Jake Gustafson. McLaughlin also finished the month of January with a +2 plus/minus.
The Winterhawks start their February schedule on Tuesday, Feb. 3 as Portland will take to the road to play against the Kelowna Rockets. Puck drop at Prospera Place will be at 7:05 p.m.
