On Friday, the head coach of the Portland Thorns, Rhian Wilkinson announced that she’ll be resigning later this month. Wilkinson was announced as the Head Coach of the Thorns back on November 29th, 2021. In her one year with Portland, she lead the team to a 10-3-9 record and won the 2022 NWSL Championship. With the 2022 NWSL Championship, Portland now holds the most championships of any NWSL club.
Late in the NWSL season, Wilkinson had reported a matter to the Thorns Club leadership while following internal processes. Club leadership then reported the matter to NWSL. A joint investigation was launched with the NWSLPA (National Women’s Soccer League Players Association), and the investigation concluded at the end of the 2022 season.
“The joint investigative team conducted a thorough investigation that resulted in a finding of no violation of League policies,” NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman said. “The Portland Thorns and Coach Wilkinson followed all League processes and policies and fully cooperated with this investigation.”
“I would like to thank the Portland Thorns organization, the fans, the staff, and most importantly the players for a remarkable year,” Wilkinson said. “During my time in Portland, I have met some incredible people and been fortunate enough to coach some of the best players in the game.”
