The Seattle Kraken selected 6-foot-2, 187-pound, 18-year-old defenseman Chase Reid from the Ontario Hockey League’s Soo Greyhounds in the first round of Friday night’s 2026 NHL Draft.
Reid will be heading to Big Ten school Michigan State University in the fall, joining a talented Spartans team that went 26-9-2 last season and 16-6-2 in Big Ten play.
Prior to joining the Greyhounds, Reid played for the North American Hockey League’s Bismarck Bobcats. He ended up with Bismarck after getting cut by the USHL’s Waterloo Black Hawks.
Reid said he used the motivation from getting cut to go out and make his family proud and prove Waterloo wrong. He did enough in his first season with Soo to earn the alternate captain honor the following season.
In his first season with the Greyhounds, Reid tallied seven goals and 33 assists for 40 points in 39 regular season games played. In the playoffs that season he recorded three assists for three points in five games. Then the next season wearing the ‘A’ he recorded 18 goals and 30 assists for 48 points in 45 regular season games. In that year’s playoffs he tallied three goals and three assists for six points in 10 games.
The Greyhounds eliminated the London Knights in five games in the first round. But Soo eventually fell to the eventual OHL champion and Memorial Cup champion Kitchener Rangers in five in the second round.
While Reid still has college hockey ahead of him where he can develop his skills, the Kraken are looking to their younger players to step up as the team has been struggling the past few seasons.
So what can Reid bring upon joinig the Kraken in the future?
Reid said he brings a two-way defensive game and loves having the puck on his stick.
“I love keeping pucks out of the back of my own net as well,” Reid stated.
Going into his time at Michigan State, Reid said he hopes to develop into an NHL player and be the best player he can be while making an impact every night.
