Are you a college student looking to go into sports journalism for a career? Can you imagine yourself walking into stadiums or arenas and finding your way to the press box to cover games? Our site was started by Derek Harper, a senior and Digital Journalism major at Central Washington University (CWU) in Ellensburg, Washington. He knew in middle school what he wanted to do for a career and from there he began networking with teams and professionals in the sports industry. Harper has had it enforced in him how important networking is.
However, Harper also understands that some schools aren’t able to have a department that focuses specifically on sports. Because of that he created this site to help provide those opportunities to fellow students. He also looks at it as a way of giving back to other students with how professionals have helped him get where he is today.
We also recognize how the COVID-19 pandemic has made it extra tough to network and gain hands on experience. But with our networking and knowledge we can provide students the hands on experience through interviews and other opportunities. Then once sports come back to the point where we can send people to cover sporting events, we’ll be doing just that.
We have the ability to get our reporters credentialed to cover sporting events throughout the region. Our networking includes professionals in various sports such as ice hockey, baseball, basketball and more. We don’t pay our writers or have the ability to offer internships yet. However, we do hope to start talking to colleges and universities next fall about providing for-credit internships to students through our website.
